Here is an interesting article from The Nature Conservancy about fire history and management in Oregon’s dry forests: https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/oregon/stories-in-oregon/oregon-forests-need-fire/
To learn more about forests in Oregon, here are some resources from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF).
Their website has a lot to offer, so poke around. The “Forest Health” page is https://www.oregon.gov/ODF/ForestBenefits/Pages/ForestHealth.aspx. Check out the links at the top left of the page, and scroll down for factsheets, maps, and more.
A diagnostic guide to “Major Insect Pests of Oregon Conifers” is found at https://www.oregon.gov/odf/Documents/forestbenefits/InsectPestDiagnosis.pdf. It is six pages long and full of great pictures.
To identify tree species, use this guide from Oregon State University: https://treespnw.forestry.oregonstate.edu/.
Here are the ODF factsheets for the two main pest species affecting Douglas fir in southwest Oregon, the Flatheaded fir borer and the Douglas fir beetle:
Oregon has always had a proactive approach to resource management. Our public access to beaches, our Exclusive Farm Use zoning (EFU), and our Forest Practices Act (FPA) are good examples.
And Oregon is continuing this tradition. The combination of the recently passed Private Forest Accord (PFA) and State Senate Bill 762 has led to many rule changes in the FPA.
Senate Bill 762 provides $220 million in funding to modernize and improve wildfire preparedness in Oregon. Programs will focus on adapting communities to wildfire risk, increasing wildfire response capacity, and improving landscape resiliency. The bill also promotes the use of prescribed fire, and much more.
We’ll be reviewing the changes once we get through all the material, but here are the links now:
Senate Bill 762 is https://www.oregon.gov/odf/Pages/sb762.aspx
The Private Forest Accord is https://www.oregon.gov/odf/Pages/private-forest-accord.aspx
Proposed changes to the Forest Practices Act is https://www.oregon.gov/odf/aboutodf/Pages/proposedlawsrules.aspx
